Who Wants $100,000?

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ, July 21, 2006- There was standing room only on Tuesday morning when Women United in Philanthropy announced to the non-profit community the availability of up to $100,000 in grant funding for Bergen County programs serving women.

Women United in Philanthropy is a newly formed women’s giving circle, launched by Bergen County’s United Way.

“Currently, we have 45 members who have contributed $1,000 each to a pooled grant fund. Our goal is to reach 100 members and $100,000 in grant funds by the first of October. 100% of members donations will go to the non-profit project we choose,” said Maxine Frampton, who serves as director of the group.

“Our plans are to strategically invest each year in creative solutions to the needs of women in Bergen County. We want to make high impact grants that will change women’s lives,” she added.

Women United in Philanthropy is modeled on successful women’s giving circles around the county. The Bergen County group is the first in New Jersey. Areas of interest to the group include affordable housing, job training and placement, access to healthcare, and help in times of unexpected crisis.

At their Annual Meeting to be held at the Stony Hill Inn on October 19, each member will cast a vote for the organization presenting the most innovative and promising program. When the votes are tallied, Women United in Philanthropy will award one grant of up to $100,000 to a local non-profit organization.

“We believe every woman in our community should have access to a safe place to live, a living wage, affordable health care, and the help of others when she urgently needs it,” said Kathy Ludwig, a member of the giving circle and resident of Demarest.

“When we announced the request for proposals we encouraged Bergen County nonprofits with the vision and capacity to manage a gift of this size to apply,” stated Gina Plotino, a member of the organization’s grant committee and resident of New Milford. “We are seeking proposals from those with the passion and commitment to make the kind of lasting difference that our investment enables.”

As a membership association, Women United in Philanthropy is a network of like-minded women in Bergen County dedicated to empowering women in every aspect of their lives. It encourages members to learn about, talk about and use money as an effective, powerful tool for change. It supports the advancement of women as business and community leaders, and educates its members about community needs and how best to address them.

By drawing on the collective financial resources, knowledge and talents of its members, Women United in Philanthropy achieves a greater level of impact than most donors can achieve alone.

Women of all ages, interests and means can join as members with a contribution of $1,000 or more annually to the Women United in Philanthropy Fund. Members are not obligated to volunteer or participate in committee work. Every member is expected to vote on grant and policy decisions.
